JFE Steel has been developing innovative technologies to mitigate environmental impact. The company informs stakeholders about its sustainability policies and achievements across a range of areas, including environment, health and safety, through publications such as the JFE Group CSR Report 2020. Recognition of these efforts led to the company being selected as a 2020 Steel Sustainability Champion.

Last year, JFE Steel also became the first Japanese steelmaker to receive a World Steel Association Steelie Award. Every year, the association presents Steelie Awards in seven categories to recognize companies and individuals that contribute to the steel industry. Last year, JFE Steel’s development of a resource-saving Si-gradient steel sheet for high-speed motors garnered a Steelie Award as an innovative technical development that supports environmental protection and productivity enhancement.

To ensure business sustainability, it is extremely important for companies to address wider challenges as well including opportunities in areas such as environment, society and governance. Since 2016, JFE Steel has sought to identify core CSR issues, set key performance indicators (KPIs) and continually review the effect of emerging issues and indicators on its business.

Looking ahead, JFE Steel plans to continue contributing to collective efforts to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by strengthening the company’s CSR management practices and working to help resolve environmental and other issues in society through its business.
